Unread post Gravemind - Once Malevolent, Now Stirring?
Before I delve into my little theory, let me state two things: (1) All of this information is based off of quotes from the characters section of http://www.halo3.com. (2) I'm not even sure I believe this stuff myself.

I was combing Halo 3's website for new Iris details when I stumbled upon two interesting quote in the character section for Gravemind:

Quote:
"It is the flood personified, and it carries with it the genetic memory of millennia of slumber"

Sound familiar? "He has had millennia for reflection, but what image does he see," the late Adjutant Reflex once said.

What other entities within the Halo universe do we know that have been around for millennia, would be around in the year 2007, and have had thousands of years to themselves? Of course, this could yet be referring to a monitor... however, the monitors most likely would never leave the Halo rings.

Next quote:

Quote:
"The thing was stopped before by the Forerunner activation of the Halo weapon."

The comparable Adjutant Reflex line: "Something that was once malevolent is now stirring."

Nearly 100,000 years after the Halos fired, wouldn't it be likely that the remaining Flood would be reawakening? Gravemind was once malevolent - as in, he posed a threat to the Forerunners/life in general - but was defeated by being sent into hibernation. In its hibernating state, Gravemind would not pose a threat to anyone (ONCE malevolent). Now, however, Gravemind is waking up, and Adjutant Reflex didn't want to be awake when he did.

Thoughts? I know this theory isn't foolproof by any means, but I thought it to be interesting.

The consensus appears to be that this is not Gravemind.

Not to be jerkish, but did you actually read my post? The evidence is rather stunning, so I think it would be logical to at least weigh the possibility given this finding. I mean, I haven't heard many theories of who else it would be.

You do bring up a lot of good points, and I did read it, but I'm going based off of what AR said in one of his PMs about how it's not who we think it is.

True, true. Then again, in the year 2007, how would he know that we knew anything about Gravemind in the first place?

Ah, Avateur...but someone else said it was 343 Guilty Spark who was the one who is "not who we think it is."

Until we figure out who it really is, which involves thinking about who it is, we won't know who it is. What a paradox.

Irony would have it that everyone and every theory will be wrong. Watch it be something unheard of and unknown. That or something so obvious that we'll all feel incredibly stupid. We should hold a lottery with people placing bets on certain forces, entities, rampant AIs, and Bungie staff. Winner gets a new Dodge Viper.

Ok here's to hoping this posts this time....

The entity that has taken over for AR is first off "within protocol" to do what "he" has done. Gravemind would decidedly not be within protocol. "He" is of higher authority than AR and is now reawakened. His purpose is unknown and he seeks to do things on his own terms. The description seems to lead to an AI that is over higher thought function that could be in the angry phase of rampancy. He has not learned mercy or sorrow, although we can also look at that as an AI in lines with 343/2401, protocol to the letter no matter the costs, it is what was written and must be followed.

The most important thing I think is that AR labels the entity as a "he." AR's description also point to something with more of a personality than AR. And I can't get over that last line "Be seeing you." It's something that Durandal would have said in Marathon while going through his own rampancy. We have a purpose in store that may not go along with what we think, but who are we to think? Did the Mk IV cyborg or does the Chief ever really think about his orders except to accomplish his mission?
