I'm not being defensive, I am being scientific. No matter how many indicators point to anything, correlation is not causation. I wasn't attacking you, I was just being firm. Since we have not witnessed a halo fire, we cannot say anything very definitive about it, no matter how close to firing it was.

Also, we have no idea what killed the Forerunner. That is one of the cool things about them.

All right, sorry. But extrapolating from the information that we have it would seem that it does have an effect on the rings.
-The semi-explosion seemed to originate from the center of the ring
-The forerunners were trying to totally wipe out the flood using the halos, and if the rings were immune to themselves, then the flood would have had an easily accessible safe haven

It's a theory. Theories are made to be broken down, altered and rebuilt. It's how speculation works.

so are you suggesting that anyone who activates halo necessarily has to die?

No. I think that if someone activates halo from halo they die. But if the activate it from the ark, then I think it is likely that the ark shields those within from the activation of halo.

Quote:
COMMANDER KEYES:

Then where? Where would someone go to activate the other rings?

343 GUILTY SPARK:

Why... the Ark, of course.

Though it would seem the forerunners were killed by halo's activation (if we can trust 343GS on this one, I'm inclined to think he's lying or maybe just doesn't know).

Quote:
343 GUILTY SPARK:

Weapons of last resort, built by the Forerunners to eliminate potential Flood hosts, thereby rendering the parasite harmless.

ARBITER:

And those who made the rings? What happened to the Forerunners?

343 GUILTY SPARK:

After exhausting every other strategic option, my creators activated the rings. They, and all additional sentient life in three radii of the galactic center, died ...as planned.

I have to agree with uncletrubble on this one. When one considers the likely cost, effort into creating a shield world that protects from the pulse (i.e. with a miniature dyson sphere that is so astronomically advanced as to be essentially magic), I just don't think the Halos would have that capability. They are the swords, whereas as Onyx is a shield.

The fact that 2401 says his creators died is the biggest smoking gun for this. Presumably, the one that fired was a Forerunner. Of course, I've read theories in which people believe humans have ALWAYS BEEN the only ones capable of firing the halos. I disagree whole-heartedly with that; I think we were tapped to be Reclaimers, and as such, get the keys to the car when mom and dad are gone.

Of course, there is no "hard proof" - but I lean significantly (95%) in the direction of "halos do not protect from pulse". But, lord knows, I have been wrong before.

I agree. I also think that maybe that is what "keepers of the flame" means-humans are the "keepers of the flame" because we essentially control halo's power, its "holy flame," as Regret referred to it as.
