The way I see it, minimal advertising would be needed to get anyone who buys Halo 3 and knows anything about Bungie to buy Marathon from Live Arcade, a whole ARG for it? Feels like overkill.

Not a whole ARG, just one that ties it in. Take a look at this excerpted interview of Alex Seropian, the man who helped create both Halo and Marathon.

To wrap it up, I’d be remiss in not asking this question just because you were in on the ground floor at Bungie. In a recent podcast – either Retronauts or GFW Radio – they discussed the possible connections between Halo and Marathon . Is there any connection besides some terminology?

Uh. [Silence] Maybe.

I think that if there are answers to be revealed, they’ll be revealed this year.

This ARG could be the combining factor.

It would have been nice to have found the quote earlier, but my Google Search skillz aren't quite as overwhelming as my awesomeness. Hence the longness.

Here's the link to the interview itself.

Wow, that quote gets me more excited about Halo 3 than anything I've seen so far.

One interesting parallel is that the Forerunner apparently hollowed out our planet (partially) to put their artifact inside. That's basically what we did with the Marathon, which was a hollowed-out moon turned into a spacecraft. It's also what the Marathon symbol (which pops up throughout Halo) is meant to represent--a world within a world.

I'm not sure that Bungie would take such specific plot points like a ship made from the hollowed out shell of a moon or asteroid and use it in both series. Cyborg? Sure. Crazy AIs? Sure. But something that specific? They're more creative than that.

I don't have a problem with them drawing that parallel--I don't see it as a failure of creativity, just a deliberate tie to the Marathon universe. The details of the Marathon's construction are incidental to the plot--just a neat detail, nothing more.

And now I see that this guy is proposing a similar idea: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=168

And he's made a credible connection to what AR has said.
