What was happening roughly 100,000 years ago

This is more about answers than questions. Nothing that we don't already know, but just some confirmation on the theory that the Halos were detonated around 100 KYA, the Missing Link Theory, and the fact that Africa (the presumed location of the Ark) is very important in the grande scheme of things.
All quotes are from Wikipedia, you can check out their cited sources if you like.
100 KYA - "The first anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) appear in Africa some time before this, they evolved from Homo heidelbergensis."
90 KYA - "African populations remain more 'diverse' in their genetic makeup than all other humans..."
"the oldest known remains of modern humans have been found in Africa and nowhere else... All other fossils of fully modern humans outside of Africa have been dated to more recent times."
"Humans did attempt on one occasion to leave Africa through the Middle East. Fossils of modern humans were found in a cave in Israel at Qafzeh and have been dated to 100,000 years ago."
"Though fossil remains of modern humans appear about 200,000 years ago, significant changes in technology do not appear until much later. Early humans apparently continued to use the same technology of the Neanderthals. Beginning about 100,000 years ago evidence of more sophisticated technology and artwork begins to emerge..."
"In addition a few fossils that appear to be symbolic have been controversially dated to much earlier than 50,000 BP. These include the Katanda bone points from the Congo, dated to 100,000 years ago..."
"Some scientists believe that the human family faced near extinction in the last 100,000 years due to some catastrophic event... The human population may have dwindled to as few as 2,000 people"

Certainly this isn't anything ground breaking, but I thought it would be a nice point of reference for a time period that seems so important, especially considering the mentions in the game and the halo3.com comic.
