Does anybody have any ideas on how the rings were first activated?
The journey that the chief makes to the index in Halo 1 and then to the control room with 343 is, I would assume, how it all happened the first time. It would also explain why there is a terminal near the control room on 04 (that was replicated in the new 04). This would also explain why 343 GS mentions about you asking him before if he would have done the same thing (or something.. IE that someone else had been there to activate the rings before.. although, it makes me wonder if the guy before you also was a jolly green giant as well).
But I get the impression they were remotely activated from the Ark by Didact, after reading the terminals? Im a bit confused now.. I also thought that Librarian was on Earth at the time the rings were activated.. from reading the terminals. Meh. He gets around a lot I guess!

Well, the Forerunners know what they built, so they couldn't have been mislead...
