I think that bungie doesn't want us to pay attention to the alligator but instead the differences in the DNA. If it was an example of flood infected DNA then we should look at the differences. The alligator may nothing more then a host.

Just like how scientists tag certain organisms with DNA tags that produce noticable proteins I think that the Forerunners tagged the Chinese Alligator along with other noteworthy organisms with these certain DNA codes to differentiate them from other non special organisms.
